How to Use Heat Exchanger Rating Calculator

Follow these steps to start the calculation

Main Panel

Main Panel consists of following sub-panels
  • Process Data Panel
  • Mechanical Data Panel
  • Properties Data Panel

Process Data Panel

Select Mode for Rating
  • All Variables Known - In this mode all process variables are to be filled and calculator will give the area required for these process conditions and accordingly % Overdesign will be reported.
  • Two Process Variables are Unknown - In this mode two process variables are unknown and calculator will do iteration to calculate values of these unknown variables. These unknown variables box will be highlighted. User can provide trial values for these variables. If user does not want to provide any value then these boxes should be left empty with nothing written in them, even "0" should not be written.
  • After filling all necessary process data Mechanical Data Panel should be filled.

Mechanical Data Panel

Enter the Geometric details for the exchanger
  • Do (mm) - Tube Outer Diameter
  • Di (mm) - Tube Innder Diameter
  • NT - Total number of tubes
  • LAYOUT - Select from 3 layouts
    • Triangular
    • In-Line Square
    • Rotated Square
  • Length (m) - Tube Length
  • Pitch (mm) - Tube Pitch
  • NPASS - Select number of tube passes
  • LS (mm) - Tube Sheet Thickness
  • Roughness (mm) - Tube Roughness
  • Ds (mm) - Diameter of Shell
  • LBC (mm) - Central Baffle Spacing
  • LBIN (mm) - Inlet Baffle Spacing
  • LBOUT (mm) - Outlet Baffle Spacing
  • Baffle Cut (mm)
  • DOTL (mm) - Shell Outer Tube Limit
  • DSB (mm) - Diametral Shell Baffle Clearance
  • NSS - Number of Sealing Strips
  • LTB (mm) - Diametral Tube Baffle Clearance

Properties Data Panel

In this section physical properties for Tube and Shell side fluids are filled. Physical properties are filled for 2 reference temperatures covering the operating temperature range of the exchanger. If properties are availabe for 1 temperature only then calculator will take same property otherwise it will interpolate from properties for 2 reference temperatures. Following properties are to be filled for shell and tube side fluid.

  • Fouling factor in m2.K/W
  • Reference Temperature in K
  • Denisty in Kg/m3
  • Viscosity in N.s/m2
  • Thermal Conductivity in W/m.K
  • Specific Heat in J/Kg.K

Sample problems can be loaded by clicking Load Sample Button. After filling all necessary data Press Calculate Button to start calculation.
